Nima Yushij
Nima was born in 1897 in the village of Yush in Mazandaran. His real name was Ali Esfandiari. His father was a farmer & Nima started his life by helping him as a shepherd. He learnt how to read & write from the local clergyman. Later, he was sent to a Catholic school by the name of St. Louis College. The influence of one of his teachers, known as Nezam Vafa, made Nima turn to poetry.
Nima wrote most of his books based on sorrow & suffering. Although this style was criticised by many, he believed that reflecting on deep-rooted problems will help to deal with them better. Some of his best works include: The Broken Heart, Soldier’s Family, Legend, City of Night, Makh Ula, & Prison. He also published numerous short stories. Nima Yushij was fluent in French & Arabic. His influence on the evolution of modern poetry in Iran should not be underestimated. He became the father of modern Persian poetry in the years that followed. Nima died in 1959.
